Why IPAF Training is Essential for Hiring Access Equipment

We all know that working at height is one of the leading causes of serious injuries and fatalities in the workplace. And while improvements have been made, the IPAF Global Safety Report 2024 highlights the need to understand this trend in more depth.

Common Causes of MEWP-Related Incidents

IPAF data reveals that Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) operators often contribute to accidents from:

  • Complacency, and believing that “nothing will go wrong”

  • Shortcuts, and failing to follow agreed-upon safe systems of work

  • Improper Use of Personal Fall Protection Equipment (PFPE)

  • Overarching and extending beyond the platform guardrail, often due to poor machine positioning or incorrect MEWP selection

How to minimize risks? Accredited training

The simplest and most effective way to reduce risks is through training with awarding bodies like IPAF.

While IPAF training is not legally required, the law requires all individuals using equipment at work must be adequately trained to ensure their own safety and the safety of others (Source: HSE). This includes the proper use, supervision, and management of MEWPS.

Why do employers and equipment rental companies value IPAF certification?

While not a legal requirement, many employers set IPAF certification as a minimum standard for MEWP operators. This is reflected in hiring policies. Most job listings for roles involving MEWPS specify that candidates must already possess a valid Powered Access License (PAL) card.

Without a PAL card, you may face challenges in hiring MEWPs from equipment rental companies.

The solution? IPAF Training

Completing IPAF training reduces the risk of injuries and also ensures you have the credentials needed to hire and operate MEWPs with confidence.
